Hanalei Bay is one of the most beautiful locations on Kauai.

This house is located directly on the waterfront of Hanalei Bay and a block from the historic Hanalei Village.

For the client the choice was intentional. Hanalei has the amenities of a family friendly community, a long gentle walking beach, some of the best surfing in the world and almost all immediate necessities within easy walking or biking distance. When you’ve settled into this house there is almost no need for a car.

Location was an important ecological decision by the client as were the planning of the structure, and the methods and materials used for construction. There was an acute awareness of local historic precedent regarding the style and scale of the building and the impact new structures have on a small community like Hanalei.

In Hanalei living is essentially outdoors. While the main house is organized around a central atrium, two large verandas facing the ocean are the true living spaces. Broad overhangs protect from the sun and frequent cloudbursts and natural ventilation keeps indoor spaces comfortable.
